Under the proposed laws, individuals found to possess, create, or distribute AI tools designed to create abuse content could face up to five years in prison. The tipster claimed French “wanted to commit sexual assaults against minors.” Authorities then searched French’s home “and recovered multiple digital devices allegedly containing over a thousand images and videos depicting child sexual abuse,” According to a report by The Sacramento Bee, investigators allegedly later watched French at a reindeer farm where he appeared to be filming a young child, who was there with their family, with a smartphone.
Fond du Lac County resident Meillo Schneider, 20, is facing seven counts of possession of virtual child pornography for allegedly accessing computer-generated child pornography and researching child sexual dolls. His arrest comes just months after Wisconsin lawmakers passed a bill in March 2024 which added AI-generated content to child pornography possession laws. FOX 11's Emily Matesic sat down with Lt. Alex Volm with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office to learn more about the dangers of this type of crime.

On one forum with 3,000 members, roughly 80 percent of respondents to a recent internal poll said they had used or intended to use AI tools to create child sexual abuse images, said Avi Jager, the head of child safety and human exploitation at ActiveFence, which works with social media and streaming sites to catch malicious content. Forum members have discussed ways to create AI-generated selfies and build a fake school-age persona in hopes of winning other children's trust, Jager said.

In 1982, the Supreme Court ruled that child pornography is not protected under the First Amendment because safeguarding the physical and psychological well-being of a minor is a compelling government interest that justifies laws that prohibit child sexual abuse material.
